Petra Detersová, psycholožka v Brně

Welcome.

I offer in-person or online sessions for people experiencing psychological difficulties, challenging life periods, relationship problems, feelings of sadness, fear, loneliness, anxiety, difficulties with decision-making, and other concerns.

What principles do I rely on in my work

I believe that our mind is the most important thing we have, and that we should strive to be at peace with it. It influences every aspect of our lives: our body, our emotions, and our spiritual life. I believe that we shape our reality through our thoughts and words.

I also believe that relationships are the foundation of everything. How we relate to the world and to other people is essential. We are all in a constant dialogue with everything around us, and therefore any “solution” must always be sought in relation to something or someone.

Each of us already carries the answers within ourselves. Sometimes we simply cannot hear or see them—especially when we are overwhelmed by distress or feel vulnerable for any reason. In such moments, it can help when someone listens to us with full attention and helps us rediscover those answers.

Services offered

Psychological counseling offers a safe and confidential space for an open conversation about what you are currently experiencing. It can help you better understand your thoughts, emotions, and relationships, and explore new ways of coping with challenging life situations. It supports mental well-being, personal resources, and the search for balance and fulfillment in life.

Appointments can be arranged:

All consultations can be conducted in Czech, Slovak, or English. If your financial situation prevents you from booking a session, please contact me so we can discuss possible arrangements.

About me: Education and experience

How do I work

My greatest inspiration has long been postmodern approaches, especially dialogical and collaborative approaches, and to some extent also solution-focused approaches. They emphasize so-called “non-expertism,” meaning the importance of the client’s own experience and self-understanding.

You are the expert on your own life, and I fully respect that (I do not give advice, try to “fix” you, or judge you). My role is to accompany you for a while — to ask curious questions and to listen. Together, we can discover possibilities and resources for change and improvement that may not be visible at first glance. An important part of the process is also working with other voices (people who are important to you, whether they are physically present or not). In this, I am inspired by the systemic approach.

Experience

My professional career, after completing my studies, has developed through an initially unplanned field of human resources (as an HR administrator, recruiter, and generalist), field social work with families in crisis with young children, and coordination of volunteers (HoSt Home-Start Czech Republic, 2019–2022), and later into counselling work both individually and in pairs (with families, with teams of service workers, and with clients of services).

Each of these job opportunities has given me the chance to talk and work with diverse people from different fields and to become familiar with their needs.

Other professional activities

  • For many years I have contributed my texts to the website Psychologie.cz. So far, I have focused on topics such as relationships, dialogue, addiction, inner balance, motivation, and many others.
  • Since 2024 I have been leading workshops for secondary school students focused on stress management, psychohygiene, presentation skills, stage fright, and burnout (within the Association for the Support of Talented Youth).
  • In 2022 I coordinated a project of the Ministry of Health within the Mental Health Care Reform (Supporting the implementation of a multidisciplinary approach to people with mental illness: Openness and a dialogical approach).
  • In 2019–2021 I led a course in socio-psychological training for psychology students at the Faculty of Social Studies, Masaryk University, focused on group work with students.
  • Since 2014 I have been a member of the Narativ association, which focuses on the development and dissemination of postmodern approaches in therapy, education, and other fields, especially dialogical and collaborative approaches.

Frequently asked questions

How can I book an appointment?
You can contact me by phone. If I am unable to answer, I will call you back. I also welcome SMS messages or emails and try to respond as quickly as possible; however, it is best if you leave your phone number so I can reach you easily. Appointments are currently (spring 2026) available within two weeks, and the exact time during the day can be arranged individually.
How long does a session last?
A standard session lasts 50–55 minutes. The first session is often slightly longer.
Is a psychologist the right choice for me?
The first meeting serves as an opportunity for us to get to know each other and to see whether our cooperation would be helpful for you. We will also clarify what we could work on together. You can then decide whether you would like to schedule another session immediately or contact me later.
How can I change or cancel an appointment?
If you cannot attend or join the session online, please let me know as soon as possible, so that I can offer the slot to someone else and find another suitable time for you. If a consultation is cancelled less than 24 hours in advance, I charge 50% of the session fee.
What about confidentiality, ethics, and GDPR?
I follow the Code of Ethics of the Czech-Moravian Psychological Society. This means that I maintain strict confidentiality regarding all information shared during our conversations. Exceptions apply only in cases required by law—specifically the reporting obligation under § 367 and § 368 of the Criminal Code (for example, a criminal act or an immediate threat to health or life), a court order, or your written consent to waive confidentiality. Notes from our sessions are kept in my records in paper form, without your full name. Your personal information (such as your name, email address, or phone number) is stored separately from session notes and is used only to contact you regarding the scheduling of appointments.
